Reading Questions

1) Why in chapter XV, is being distracted by art rather than solely concentrating on art such a horrible thing? Why can't art as a distraction from the real world be a positive thing?

2) How can one determine that a painter is significantly less important than a cameraman?

  1. It is often wondered why escapism is such a taboo device for creating art in contemporary society. Mainly by those who are extremist to the 'Marxist' side of things where the artist is not important but the society observing the art is. There is a fear that in distracting too long from the real world, the artist has full custody of his/her audience for impure reasoning. I'm on the neutral fence about that one. I believe there must be a connection to the audience and what they believe, but not at the expense of technical ability or personal creativity.
